The 'Holy Island' was their launch pad to convert, pagan, England to Christianity, known as the Apostle founded monastic cathedral holy island Lindisfarne Castle is a 16th-century castle located on Holy Island, near Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England, much altered by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1901. The island is accessible from the mainland at low tide by means of a causeway, built in 1550 Lindisfarne Castle, a 16th-century fortification made into a family home by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1550 construction of the castle began, using stone from Lindisfarne Priory which had been closed by that time. The castle was strengthened between 1570-1572 and the former priory was used to store naval equipment. During the reign of Elizabeth I, minor repairs were done and new platforms for advanced artillery (such as large cannons) were 1901, the castle was bought by Edward Hudson, publisher and founder of Country Life magazine The castle is small and looks like a fort, which is appropriate since it was built to protect English ships in Lindisfarne Harbour from Scottish and Viking of Lindisfarne, known as the Apostle of Northumbria, was an Irish monk and missionary credited with restoring Christianity to Northumbria Aidan of Lindisfarne[ (died 31 August 651) He founded a monastic cathedral on the island of Lindisfarne, served as its first bishop, and travelled ceaselessly throughout the countryside, spreading the gospel to both the Anglo-Saxon nobility and to the socially disenfranchised (including children and slaves)
