In our professional practice we have frequently beenapplied to for a treatise on Building, to which theyoung student in Architecture, as well as in Building,might refer and see, in an erection of simplicity orsplendour, the necessity of studying all the detailsessential for such erection. In the office of the Archi-tect, it frequently occurs that Buildings, from thevariableness of practice, are only taken in detachedparts as the work proceeds ; and in the workshop ofthe Bulkier (where they have drawings and specificationsto work from), the workman, or pupil, is seldom allowedto see them, but takes his instructions from the fore-man for the portion of work to be executed; conse-quently he has little opportunity of acquiring thecombined information requisite for the artisan in thebuilding department to possess.
