British Museum library. 19th-century artwork of people consulting books in the reading room at the British Museum, London, UK. This museum was established in 1753, and housed the UK's national library (the British Library) until 1997. It included a number of libraries and reading rooms. The first reading room was opened in 1759. The reading room shown here is the Old Reading Room, in the north wing of the museum, with 26 tables for 208 people. A new, larger reading room, the Circular Reading Room, was constructed in the 1850s. Artwork from 'London' (Charles Knight, 1841).
