MILNE, WILLIAM: Major, Machine Gun Corps ; son of George Milne ; born Boddam,14 April 1893 ; matriculated 1911, , 1914. He continued to study Science,until the outbreak of war diverted his energies. Having joined the in 191 o, he ap-plied for a commission in a combatant unit andin September 1914 was gazetted to the , and was sent to Aberdeen to recruit forhis regiment in the North. Although consci-. entious in his duty he cordially disliked beingkept at home to point out to others what to himwas so obvious. Aftertraining as a machinegunner, he succeededin getting abroad officer with the1st Battalion DublinFusiliers. He servedthrough the whole ofthe Gallipoli Campaignand went to Francein time to take partin the Somme battlesin 1916. In recogni-tion of his services and unflinching bravery in holding an importantposition in Belgium, he was decorated, April1918, with the Croix de Guerre by a FrenchGeneral, and promoted Major. A few dayslater, on 24 April 1918, he was severely woundedand captured at Kemmel Hill. He died as theresult of his wounds at Soldau, Germany, 25July 1918. He was of an unassuming nature, as reliablein classes as on the football field and as he laterproved to be on service ; in short, he was one ofthe best.
