Formation of an AIDS virus particle. The sequence of false-colour transmission electron micrographs shows the formation of a Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) particle, the causative agent AIDS, at the surface of an infected lymphocyte. The first appearance of the virus (top left) is as a small bump (red) on the surface of the cell. The virus then buds out (top right) & is eventually cut off from the cell membrane. The newly-released virus particle (bottom left) has an outer shell of dense material (red) which is reorganized to form the central nucleoid that becomes characteristically elongated in the mature virus (bottom right). Magnification: x100,000 at 6x6cm size.
