For the first time intwenty years the inaugural address contained no refer-ence to the Southern States as a distinct part of thenation. This signified that the long sectional contest,growing out of slavery, was at an end. Whatever evihmight be left for the American people to deal with, thegreatest evil was overcome. CLEVELAND. 343 President Arthur served out his term of office, duringwhich time the nation was at peace and no new Stateswere added to the Union. For the presidential elec-tion of 1884, the Republican National Conventionnominated James G. Blaine of Maine as President, andJohn A. Logan of Illinois as Vice-President; while theDemocratic convention nominated Grover Clevelandof New York and Thomas A. Hendricks of Democratic candidates received 219 electoralvotes, and their opponentsbut 182 ; so that the Repub-lican party was defeated,after twenty-four years ofpower. Candidates were alsonominated, at this election,by the prohibitory tempe-rance party, and by the citi-zens or greenbackparty,but these obtained no electo-ral votes.
