Sphalerite. It is composed of zinc sulphate and the principal ore of zinc, it is found as either isometric tetrahedral crystals or in compact crypotocrystalline masses. Zinc extraction from sphalerite also yields the rare minerals cadmium, gallium and also one of the rarest crude material indium. The largest deposits of sphalerite ore are in North America and Australia. Uses of indium are in fusible alloys, solders, electronics, semiconductors and indium tin oxide thin films for liquid crystal displays (LCD)and thin-film applications. Object size of this close-up is approx. 10mm.
