An old Ottoman miquelet smooth-bore shotgun, mother-of-pearl inlay

Miquelet Lock is a modern term used by collectors and curators, largely in the English-speaking world, prevalent in Spain and Portugal, Italy, the Balkans, North Africa, the Ottoman Empire and throughout Spain's colonies from the late 16th to the mid 19th centuries. The miquelet is often termed the "Mediterranean" lock due to its widespread use in areas surrounding the Mediterranean, particularly in the Ottoman sphere of influence.
