That saint, shortly before his deathwhich probably took place in 604, consecrated as bishop, lest the infant Church should beleft for a time without a pastor. Of the new arch-bishops episcopate Bede writes: Lawrence, havingattained the dignity of archbishop, strove most vigor-ously to add to the foundations of the Church whichhe had seen so nobly laid and to forward the work byfrequent words of holy exhortation and by the con-stant example of his devoted labour. The only ex-tant genuine document relating to him is the fragment. ST.
