Lilly : — Referring to your letter of April 14 will say that our examinations indicate that thesoil deficiencies which are liable to occur in Western Oregon soils are a lack of organicmatter, consequently a lack of nitrogen, and acidity. The acidity in some soils runsquite high. In other states it has been found a sound agricultural practice to add groundlimestone for neutralizing acidity in soils. I think that this will have to be done in thewestern part of this state, if ground limestone can be obtained at a reasonable figure. Yours truly, H. V. Tartar, Chemist. How and When to Apply Commercial Fertilizers. THE BEST METHOD and time for applying commercialfertilizers depends upon conditions and the kind offertilizer used. They should be gotten into the groundin time to become dissolved and available when the youngplants are ready to use the plant food. Some of the slow acting fertilizers are best applied a con-siderable time before the seed is sown, and on heavy soils notiable to be washed by winter rains those fertilizers may beapplied during the winter or fall prior to sowing the seed.
