Wednesbury is a place of considerable antiquity; as the originalform of its name, Wodnesbeorge, indicates—it was a beorh or hill, dedicated by the Saxons to their war god, Woden. Two battles werewaged here in those early times. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle recordsthat in the year 592 there was a great slaughter in Britain, and Creawlinwas driven out, this defeat of that King of Wessex by the Britonsbeing located at Wodnesbyrg. The second battle on this spottook place in 715, when Ceolred, King of Mercia, encountered hisgreat rival, Ina, King of Wessex. In 914 Wednesbury was fortifiedagainst the Danes and the Welsh by the Princess Ethelfleda, a daughterof Alfred the Great, and at that time acting as Viceroy of Mercia forher brother, Edwar
