Oki-shima island, on Lake Biwa, Japan


Oki-shima, on Lake Biwa, home to less than 500 inhabitants. The island can trace it's history back to the 12th century when seven defeated soldiers arrived their taking sanctuary from a lost this day inhabitants of the island can be found with the same surnames as the soldiers.
