He was born in Middletown,Conn., in 1838. His father served inthe war of secession as private in Com-pany E, 14th Connecticut Infantry, andhis brother, Ansell J. Barnes, was Corporalin the loth Connecticut Infantry. Hisgrandfather, Josiah Barnes, was a privatein the Revolutionary army, and after in-dependence was won loved to talk of the adventures of that day Josiah Barnes and a fellow comrade were standing talk-ing when a cannon-ball came rolling down the road. The soldierwho stood close to Barnes put out his foot to stop the ball andlost his foot in FIRST LIGHT , lsr,l-lsr,r, 7r,- ALFRED Q. BISHOP, of Guilford, Conn., enlisted Octoi; mustered in the United States serviceOctober 26, 1S61. At the battle of vSeces-sionville, June 16. 1862, he was in the hot-test of the fight, and the severe service andconsequent exposure l)r(nioht on a sicknesswhich led to his being invalided was honorably discharged October i,1862. Comrade Bishop was born in Guilford,Conn., October 19, 1843. His father wasCaptain of one of themilitiacompanies thatformed the escort of General La Fayettewhen he visited this country in 1S24. Hewas a prominent citizen of Guilford. After the war ComradeBishop obtained employment in New York City and is nowone of its most esteemed business men.
