We might then expect a similar agree-ment between these variations in the distribution of the ice and the variationsin the temperature of the Spitsbergen Current of the same year, be-cause the water will probably need about the same time to reach thecentral region of the Barents Sea and the northern region west of Spits-bergen. The following table gives the areas of open water in the BarentsSea east of 200 E. Long, in May, and the anomalies of the temperatureof the Spitsbergen Current in the same years. For 1900 and 1901 wehad to use the values from the southern region o( the current; this mayperhaps be the explanation why the values of these years do not agreeas well as the 1876-76 1% <% 1897 L398 -99 900 I»99-1901 M08-10 1900 1901 I9°5 1 mm 1910 Thousands of Square Kilometres ofop< 11 water in the Barents Sea in May Anomaly of the Temperature of thergen Current 440 398 639 568 492 1912.
