Kon-Tiki balsa raft, artwork. This raft was used in a 1947 expedition led by Norwegian explorer, writer and ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002). He and five others sailed across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands. The aim was to show that people from South America could have settled Polynesia. The voyage took 101 days, departing Callao, Peru, on 28 April, and making landfall on Raroia atoll in the Tuamotu group of islands on 7 August. They had covered a distance of 6980 kilometres.
