Personnel at the Three Mile Island nuclear installation near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA, practise retrieving debris from a scale model of reactor Unit 2 that was damaged in the accident of 28th March, 1979. The accident resulted from a loss of reactor cooling water, which caused exposed fuel rods to melt, burn through the reactor vessel & sink to the basement of the reactor building. Here, the man at left is using hydraulic pincers to drop a rock into one of the cylindrical storage canisters. In 1989, cleaning- up operations have been in progress for 10 years, & are expected to continue for another 30 years before the task is completed.
