Dunsink observatory. Historical artwork of the dome of the Dunsink observatory in County Dublin, Ireland. The dome houses the South 12 inch refractor, which was one of Ireland's premier telescopes throughout the 19th century. The huge glass lens was ground in France, and bought by the wealthy Sir James South. His attempts to have the lens mounted resulted in an unsteady mount, and he refused to pay for the work. Legal action forced him to pay, and he was so enraged he smashed his faulty mount, and presented the lens to Dublin University in around 1829. The telescope is now used largely by undergraduates at the university.
