A Barking Carrier collecting fish from the trawler fleet on the Doggerbank, a large sandbank in the North Sea off the east coast of England. Barking is a town in East London, England in which fishing was the most important industry until the mid-19th centuries. Until about 1870 the trade was mostly in live fish, using welled smacks (like in the illustration) in which the central section of the hull, between two watertight bulkheads, was pierced to create a 'well' in which seawater could circulate and fish could be kept fresh for longer.
