A COLD RIDE 121 After this publication, there reached him at the same time pressingrequests from Marietta, Iowa, and from Winterset, Iowa, to come to thehelp of the pastors in protracted meetings. Marietta was about seventymiles to the northeast; Winterset about thirty-five miles to the south-west. On an exceedingly cold winter day, in the morning, he started withhis son Joseph for Marietta. On reaching the open prairie northeast ofthe city, he had driven hardly a mile from the timber when the trackentirely disappeared. The snow had filled it. Going a little beyond thelast mark, he stopped the sleigh. Joseph, what shall we do? said he. The boy, eager to go on, wishing to see the lads of Marietta, and tovisit in Judge Smiths house, eagerly answered, not realizing the greatdanger: Let us go on; we can travel by direction; the sun is shining, andif it clouds over, we can see the weeds in places, and by their branchesknow our direction. 11 Joseph, we can never cross these prairies to-day.
