Bacterial conjunctivitis. One- year-old boy with pus around his red, swollen eyes. These symptoms are characteristic of bacterial conjuntivitis, the inflammation of the mucous membrane that covers the front of the eye (conjunctiva) caused by infection by bacteria including Staphylococcus and Streptococcus. This condition can be very painful and is highly infectious. This type of conjunctivitis is usually treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments.
