The latter year he was amember of the National Republican Convention; in 1886 a Republicancandidate for mayor of New York; in 1889 he was made a UnitedStates Civil Service Commissioner, serving until 1895, when he be-came president of the New York Board of Police Commissioners,—holding this position until 1897, when he accepted the post of Assist-ant Secretaiy of the Theodore Roosevelt
