This image may not be used to state or imply NOAO endorsement of any company or product NGC 1929 superbubble nebula. This is a huge cloud of gas and dust in which stars are forming. The central bubble of the nebula, which measures around 325 by 250 light years, was excavated from the gas and dust by the cluster of bright, massive stars at centre. These formed within the nebula, before their powerful stellar winds and possibly the explosive supernova death of one or more of them carved the hole in the nebula. The nebula glows as radiation from the stars ionises the hydrogen gas it contains. NGC 1929 lies in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way that is some 160,000 light years from Earth. This image was taken by the Gemini Multi- object Spectrograph (GMOS) on the Gemini South telescope, Chile.
