Poland, Krakow (Cracow): Saint Mary's Basilica houses Europe's largest altarpiece (13m high by 11m wide), carved in twelve years by German artist Veit Stoss (Wit Stwosz) in the 15th century, with 200 carved wooden figures measuring up to high. Stolen by the Nazis during the war and hidden in Nuremberg, it was returned to the basilica 15 years later. Completely restored between 2015 and 2021, it’s a jewel of late Gothic architecture. The closed altarpiece features twelve bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and Christ.
