Repairing submarine telegraph cable, 19th-century artwork. Telegraph engineers and sailors with the Cable Ship Electra using a grapple to raise a submarine telegraph cable for repair. The CS Electra was built in 1884 and was operated out of Gibraltar by the Eastern Telegraph Company. It was scrapped in 1923. Artwork from the 14th volume (second period of 1894) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
