The Animals of these shells affix themselves to otherbodies by a particular muscle, which is protruded throughthe gaping part of the valves ; they also adhere, whenyoung, by the byssiform epidermes which covers theexterior : a specimen now before us, which we procuredin the Bay of Naples, perfectly exemplifies this singularproperty.
