The class prefers a rich, though light and well-drained soil, and should be covered deeply with a mulch the first two winters. The leaf of the Acanthus was copied by ancient Grecians in ornamenting the capitals of their architectural columns. A. latifolius (mollis var. latifolius). 4 ft., 7-9. Italy.
