View of El Capitan, at over 3,000 ft (910) the largest granite monolith in the world, taken at sunrise from the shore of the Merced river. 'The Nose', the most famous and popular climbing route, is washed in early morning sunlight and reflected in the river. Yosemite National Park, comprising over 1,200 square miles of wilderness contains within its boundaries some of the most amazing geological and natural wonders on the planet; imposing vertical granite cliffs, stunning waterfalls, grand meadows, giant sequoia trees and an abundance of wildlife. Granted by Abraham Lincoln to California for preservation in 1864, the lands attained National Park status in 1890. Today, 200 miles (320 km) of roads give visitors access to many of the parks features, allowing millions of tourist from all over the world to visit this natural splendor.
