Hepatitis C. Computed tomography (CT) scan (frontal view) of a 58 year old woman with chronic hepatitis C, an infection of the liver. Hepatitis C is a virus that infects liver cells, causing degeneration and scarring (cirrhosis). It is transmitted by blood-to-blood contact. The liver (top left) has atrophied (shrunk), and the spleen (top right) is enlarged, a condition called splenomegaly. There is also a collection of fluid in the abdominal wall, around the intestines below the liver and spleen. Life expectancy at this stage depends on how well the patient responds to treatment.
