In commencing treatment by this method 20 grains of each drug is amoderate amount to use at a time. In proper cases a gradual increase ofnot over 5 grains of each at any one time may be used, and it is never safeto vaporize more than 40 grains of each at any one period. These fumiga-tions, as a rule, should be administered only on alternate days, the patientsmouth being frequently examined for the purpose of discovering any pre-monition of salivation. Great watchfulness must be maintained on the partof the patient to avoid catching cold immediately after the application ofmercurial vapor. In the systemic treatment of syphilis after from 30 to 50 inunctions havebeen taken or a corresponding amount has been administered by means offumigations for a period of from two to three months, it is well to return tothe internal administration for a time.
