Along the river shore,on the Maryland side, ran the Chesapeake and Ohio canal. On the morning of the 20th of September Major-GeneralFitz-John Porter was ordered to send two divisions ov^er theriver to co-operate with a cavalry advance, and scour thecountry in the direction of Charlestown and obedience to these instructions, Sykes, with his division,composed of two brigades of regulars and one of volunteers,. THE DAM AT SHEPHERDSTOWN. was directed to proceed in the direction of Charlestown, andMorrell, with Barness brigade leading, in the direction ofShepherdstown. The cavalry did not, however, reach theVirginia side until Sykess pickets were in close proximity tothe advancing foe. Sykes crossed the river early in the morning, and Lovells2d (regulars) Brigade skirmishers, advancing a mile into thecountry, soon developed the enemy, some three thousand - 56 - strong, approaching with artillery. Warrens 3d Brigade wasimmediately thrown over in support and formed on Lovellsleft, Lovell having meanwhile been directed to fall backslowly; and Barness brigade, arriving at the same time, on itsroad to Shepherdstown, was directed to connect with Lovellsright. The other brigades of Morrells division did not the request of General Sykes, Barnes suspended his move-ment towards Shepherdstown, and supported Sykes. Hisbrigade was deployed under the bluffs. None of his regimentsreached the summit,
