Detail of the facade of the Cathedral of St Lawrence in the historic centre of Genoa with a gothic sculpture representing a lion, Liguria, Italy
Genoa Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Genova, Cattedrale di San Lorenzo) is dedicated to Saint Lawrence, and is the seat of the Archbishop of Genoa. The cathedral was consecrated by Pope Gelasius II in 1118 and was built between the twelfth century and the fourteenth century as fundamentally a medieval building, with some later additions. On the sides of the staircase in front of the facade are two lions made by the workshop of Benedetto Antelami in the early thirteenth century.
