Commercial apple growers of Vir- ginia suffered a loss of thirty to thirty- five per cent, or considerably more than $3,000,000, last season from con- trollable diseases and insects, according to conservative estimates made by field men of the Virg^inia extension division at Blacksburg. They estimated that cedar rust was responsible for fifty-three per cent of the loss, the other damage being distributed among bitter rot, codling moth, scab, frog-eye leaf spot, and other miscellaneous dLeases and insects.
