Although some railways in small towns, especially inWestern states where they were constructed in connec-tion with temporary booms, have ceased to operatesince 1890, a much larger number of new street rail-ways have been constructed. Itis impossible, however,to determine by the dates of the charters of the pres-ent companies the number of railways established since1890, since in many cases the companies now in opera-tion are merely reorganizations or combinations ofearlier companies. The combination of street railways has greatlyincreased the size of many operating railway , many railways which have not undergone con-solidation have extended their tracks very materiallysince 1890. The difference in the importance of theaverage railway company at the two census periods maybe seen from Table 3, which is based on the number ofoperating Table 3.—Cmiijxirdiire size of operating companies: 190g and 1890.^ I The number of operating companies in 1890 was 769 and this number is usedin all the computations. In 1902, 817 companies reported trackage and cars, 811fare passengers, and 797 number of employees, and these numbers have beenused respectively. These figures indicate that the average operating com-pany in 1902 was more than twice as important in bothtrackage and traffic as the aveiage operating companyin 1890. Trackage and motive power.—As will be seen fromTable 1 the increase in the length of line of street rail-ways in 1902, as compared with 1890, is 10, miles,or per cent, and the increase in the length of trackis 14,4 miles, or per cent. By length of lineis meant the length of the first main track exclusive ofsecond track and sidings. The length of all track is amore valuable basis for comparison.
