Body short or more or less elongate; scales strongly denticulate, very small on nape and anterior part of back ; two incomplete lateral lines, or the lower absent. Teeth conical, forming a villiform band with more or less strongly enlarged canines in front of each jaw. End of maxillary exposed. Dorsal with 16 to 21 spines, anal with 4 to 10. Occipital and parietal crests strong, the former extending to between the orbits; proemaxillary process extending to between the orbits. Vertebrae 31-35 *.
