Ball-catching exercise. Astronaut Kathryn P. Hire about to catch a ball in microgravity conditions. This is part of the kinelite experiment in the Neurolab on space shuttle Columbia during mission STS-90 (17th April 1998-3rd May 1998). She is plugged in to a variety of sensors which monitor her nervous and muscular responses. Dafydd R. Williams is monitoring the experiment. The Neurolab is designed to test how human bodies adapt to microgravity conditions, and catching a ball is a simple, yet effective way of doing this. It is hoped that the research will lead to a better understanding of balance disorders such as vertigo and travel sickness.
