Blocked Fallopian tube. Coloured X-ray of a woman's blocked Fallopian tube (oviduct, centre). The tube has become blocked by a hydrosalpinx, a fluid-filled swelling of the tube, possibly due to pelvic inflammatory disease. Surgery may be required to drain and repair the swollen tube, or remove it if it is severely damaged. Infertility may result since the Fallopian tubes carry the reproductive egg cells from the ovaries to the uterus. Injection of a contrast medium has revealed the patient's reproductive system on this X-ray (hysterosalpingogram).
