Hereford, Herefordshire. 19th May 2017. Crowds gather to see Pacific steam locomotive LNER Class A3 4472 commonly known as the Flying Scotsman at Hereford railway station as it travels from Shrewsbury to Cardiff and then Newport to Bristol Parkway via Gloucester. The 94 year old Flying Scotsman was originally built in Doncaster for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), emerging from the works on 24 February 1923. The locomotive set two world records for steam traction. It was the first steam locomotive to be officially authenticated at reaching 100 miles per hour in 1934, and it then set a record for the longest non-stop run by a steam locomotive when it ran 422 miles in 1989 in Australia.
