ON THE TULALIP AND SWINUMISH INDIAN RESERVATIONS ?/. THE INDIANS 457 square or spritsail to be used in sailing beforethe wind. It is well-nigh impossible to indulgein either beating or tacking, for the canoes haveno keels and, because of their smooth and broadlyrounded bottoms, any attempt to beat results inslipping away rapidly to leeward. To the uninitiated it seems almost border-ing on witchery to see an old Indian seated in thestern of his light canoe, troll trailing astern, con-tinually paddling on one side of the canoe onlyand yet going straight ahead in a relativelystraight line, when, apparently, by all the can-nons of kinetics he should be traveling in abeautiful circle. The manner of effecting this isvery simple indeed and consists solel}^ in trailingthe paddle rudder-fashion after every couple ofstrokes and thereby correcting the natural ten-dency of the craft to turn in response to animpulse continually directed from one side. There is also another method of paddling use
