Amsterdam, the Netherlands - 28 May 2016; no people in view. Here we see all of AmsterdamÕs famous archetypes - beautiful canals, gabled houses and the ever-present bicycles. All shot from a bridge over the major Singel Canal. Amsterdam is the NetherlandsÕ capital, famed for its artistic heritage, scenic canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, all legacies of the cityÕs 17th-century Golden Age. Despite its relatively small size and population, it is one of EuropeÕs great cities. The city has more than one hundred kilometres of canals, about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges. The Singel is one of the oldest; it encircled the city in the Middle Ages and served as a moat around the city until 1585. And let's not forget that bicycles rule Amsterdam. They are everywhere. In fact, transport is topsy-turvy here, where aggressive bikers bully both pedestrians and motorists. Really.
