"Giving One Horse the ; — The fre- quent practice, where the two horses of a team are not equally strong, of " giving one horse the advantage " is based upon the principle that the amount of work done by each horse is inversely proportional to the length of the lever arm upon which he works. Suppose it is desired to so modify an evener that three-eighths of the work will fall upon one horse and five- eighths upon the other. In this case the horse which is to do five-eighths of the work must have his end of the evener shortened until its length is just three-fifths as long a"> that of the horse which is to do three-eighths of the work.
