Bowel surgery in pneumoperitoneum. Surgeons performing an exploratory laparotomy to examine the bowel of a patient with pneumoperitoneum - an abnormal accumulation of air or other gas in the peritoneal cavity. Laparotomy is a surgical procedure involving a large incision through the abdominal wall to gain access into the abdominal cavity. Here, they are eviscerating (removing) the intestines from the abdominal cavity in order to find the site of a perforation in the viscus that they think is the cause of the pneumoperitoneum.
