The fascial artery (Plate CXVI.) comes from the external carotid just above the origin of the lingual artery and passes obliquely upward under the Digastric and Stylo-hyoid muscles, it then passes forward in a groove on the posterior surface of the submaxillary gland. This much of the artery is called the cer- vical portion. It then passes upward over the lower jaw at the anterior margin of the Masseter muscle to the angle of the mouth.
