The danger of inflammationextending along the Eustachian tube and producing suppurationin the middle ear must not be forgotten. When cauterising a. Fig. 81. Thl, Althors Electk()1>Ii, Handlk. nostril, care is necessary to prevent two opposite parts of thecavity beins- touched with the electrode, because if both surfaceshave been burned, the}- are liable to unite when they come inapposition, as a result of the swelling of the tissues which alwaysfollows the operation. It is usually advisable to wait about afortnight before again applying the cautery, so as to allo^^ allinflammatory swelling to subside and healing to be thoroughlycompleted. As substitutes for the galvano-cautery, various chemicalagents are a^ailable for the destruction of hypertrophied por-tions of the mucous membrane, but the objection to their useis that their action cannot be precisely limited. The mostefficacious of these are: chromic acid, glacial acetic acid, nitrate CHRONIC CATARRH OF THE XASO-PHARYNX. 257 of silver, chloride of zinc (a concentrated solution), and nitrateof mercury. If a proper chromic acid carrier (Fig. 82), is notat hand, a silver probe
