Jacobite Steam Train to Mallaig which featured in Harry Potter films
Described as one of the great railway journeys of the world this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. It starts near the highest mountain in Britain (Ben Nevis), visits Britain's most westerly mainland railway station (Arisaig), then passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain (Loch Morar), and the shortest river in Britain (River Morar) and finally arrives next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe - Loch Nevis. The train leaves Fort William at 10:20am and returns to Fort William at 4:00pm with an hour and a half in Mallaig. The West Highland rail line opened in 1901, and remains an impressive feat of engineering. Running from Fort William to Mallaig There are seven tunnels within a few miles of Lochailort Station, the longest being 350 yards long. More obvious are the viaducts. At the head of Loch nan Uamh, three miles west of Lochailort, is the Loch nan Uamh or Gleann Mama Viaduct. This is an eight arch viaduct made of "Concrete Bob" McAlpine's favourite material. Though smaller than the Glenfinnan Viaduct, there are those who feel that with its coastal setting the Loch nan Uamh Viaduct is even more inspiring.
