Liberty ship construction. Exploded illustration showing the standard units used in the construction of a Liberty ship. Liberty ships were cargo ships built during World War II by the USA to replace wartime losses in the merchant fleets of the Allied nations, including the UK. These losses were due to attacks by German U-boats. More than 2700 Liberty ships were built by 18 US shipyards between 1941 and 1945.
