. The uncivilized races of men in all countries of the world; being a comprehensive account of their manners and customs, and of their physical, social, mental, moral and religious characteristics. By Rev. J. G. With new designs by Angas, Danby, Wolf, 1871. (1.) THE BATTLE. ,See page 1034.). (2.) VILLAGE IN THE KINGSMILL ISLANDS. (Seepage 1038.) (1035) IDOLS OF THE MANGAIANS. 1037 might be totally innocent, was exceedinglywrong, and that they ought to abandon thefeud. But the new converts argued that itwas very demand that they shouldabandon their feuds against others while thefeuds against themselves were still in op-eration. In their architecture the Mangaians displaythe same love of carving which has alreadybeen mentioned. Mr. Williams thus de-scribes a building which had been erectedfor him, and which was large enough to holdsixteen hundred persons:— It was a fine building, of an oval shape, about one hundred and twenty feet in large posts which supported the roof(eight in number), the ridge-pole, and therafters were most beautifully carved, andtastefully colored with various native prep-arations. It is impossible, however, so to describethem as to enable the reader to form a correctidea of their appearance, or of the taste andingenuity displayed
