The market last week was crowded with stock, and retailers bought spar- ingly. The hot .weather had a bad ef- fect on trade throughout the city. Stock from outside points arrived in poor condition. The wholesalers are complaining of the poor demand and the low prices. An abundance of roses in all varieties came in last week, the best sellers being Bussell, Hadley and Ophelia. The Killarneys and Bich- mond, unless extra fancy, had little de- mand. Beauties, too, ran low in de- mand and price. The supply of carna- tions far exceeds the demand. Fancy varieties in these are scarce. Beacon and Enchantress are the best carnations being received. White and yellow mums are ignored by buyers, as it is too early for them. There still are plenty of asters and dahlias coming in daily. Gladioli and tuberoses are about over for this year. Cosmos is expected to come in heavily this week. Lilies and valley have the usual good call. Various Notes. Paddy Patton, Walter Young, Fred H. Weber, James Arata, W. S. Wells and William Ossick are attending the Illinois state fair, at Springfield, this week.
