The ciliary nerves liave two sources of origin—tire long ciliary nerves arisefrom the nasal branch of the ophthalmic nerve, and the short ciliarj nervesspring from tlie lenticular ganglion. They pierce the sclera around the opticnerve, and pass forward between the sclera and the choroid; at the posterior partof the globe they groove the inner surface of the sclera and are intimately attachedto it. They pass forward to the ciliary body, where they break up to form aplexus, from which fibers are distributed to the ciliary muscle, the iris, and thecornea. Compression of these nerves against the resisting sclera in increasedintra-ocular tension, as in glaucoma, causes intense pain in the eyeball andanesthesia of the cornea. The
