Pill camera. Doctor viewing images from a pill camera on a computer screen. The camera, which is enclosed within a small capsule, is swallowed by a patient to obtain images of the digestive system. Light-emitting diodes around the lens provide illumination for the camera. The digital images are transmitted by radio waves to an external recorder worn by the patient. The camera can be used to diagnose ulcers, inflammation and cancer, amongst other digestive disorders. This is the Pillcam, developed by the Israeli company Give Imaging. It weighs 4 grams and runs on battery power, transmitting over 50,000 images over an eight-hour period.
