Manycharacters from previous short storycollections reappear in these pages; werecognize again with pleasure such oldacquaintances as the Aerial Board ofControl (prominent in With the NightMail), Stalky, Beetle, Mr. King theLatin teacher, Laughton O. Zigler theAmerican inventor, Pyecroft, Penfen-tcnyou, and many another. Kipling hasnever yet been able to create an inter-esting character and keep him insidethe covers of a single book. Only two of the stories deal directlywith the Great War, Swept and Gar-nished and Mary Postgate; bothwell constructed and artistic tales butfar too grimly tragic to be in the leastenjoyable.
